Once children move from Reception in to year 1 they move through to Elm class. In Elm class there are up to 15 year 1 children working alongside up to 15 year 2 children.
The move from Reception to year 1 is an important transition in school as the children move on to the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. Please visit our curriculum page for more information about what is covered during this stage.
To ensure a smooth transition between Willow and Elm class, the classrooms are situated next door to each other and share a large, covered outdoor space at the back of the classrooms. The children in Elm class use this outdoor area in a more structured way to support their learning in line with the national curriculum. For example, they might perform on the stage a story which they have been learning about in English or they might apply their addition and subtraction skills with a recipe in the mud kitchen! The children in Elm class take part in continuous provision activities to enhance their learning, meaning they still have the opportunity to learn through play and apply their learning independently in the reading, writing and maths zones of the classroom, whilst also benefiting from teacher-led input and activities to ensure they all make good progress across the year.
Phonics continues to be taught throughout year 1 where the children build on the knowledge they have gained in Reception. At the end of year 1, children take their statutory phonics screening test. Last year, 92% of children in Elm class passed the phonics screening test, demonstrating our high expectations for all children in this area.
