We are curious, unique and together

Oak Class

Children in Oak Class are in Years 5 and 6 – up to 15 children in each year group. The class work together in the afternoons but in the mornings we have two teachers so that the Year 5 and 6 children can be taught English and Maths seperately, ensuring they get the support and challenge they need to make good progress and leave Whiteshill more than ready for secondary school. To see our end of Key Stage 2 results, please see our data page of the website. The children in Oak Class are taught according to the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum – more information about this can be found on the Curriculum page of our website.

In Oak Class, we begin to give the children more responsibility around the school, enabling them to become good role models for the younger children and prepare for the self-motivation and self-efficacy they will need to be successful at secondary school and beyond. The children take on a host of jobs around the school, setting up for assembly and helping with the younger children at lunch time. They also run their own lunchtime clubs, sharing their unique interests and managing each session, even giving certificates in assembly to children who have attended their club.

The responsibility all the children look forward to most of all at Whiteshill is becoming a Reception buddy in Year 6. The children are paired up with a child in Reception who they support throughout their first year in school – this partnership has huge benefits for both the Reception children and the Year 6 children too. They learn how to put a younger child’s needs before they own and experience the joy that this giving attitude can bring!
